Solder A Half-Inch Stainless Steel Ball Valve 2012-03-20
Stainless Steel Ball Valve are commonly used in plumbing. They are installed in the hot and cold water copper lines so if you have to do a repair job like changing the faucets on a sink or taking out a sink to put a new one in, you don't have to turn off the water to the entire house. You just turn off the ball valve on the water lines leading to the work project.The handle of the valve is connected to an internal ball that has a hole running through it. When the valve is in the open position the hole in the ball is lined up with the opening in the copper pipes on either side of it. When the ball valve is in the closed position the holes disappear from in front of the pipe openings and no water can flow through. Soldering in a ball valve is no different from soldering a regular copper joint. Here is how to solder in a ball valve on a new copper water pipe installation.
1 Clean the copper pipe and ball valve. Vigorously rub sandpaper on the last 2 inches of the copper pipe to remove dirt and debris. Brush the inside of the ball valve with a fitting brush.
2 Coat both the end of the copper pipe and the inside of the ball Check Valve with soldering flux. A thin layer is all you need.
3 Slide the ball valve onto the copper pipe as far as it will go. Start your propane torch and heat up the end of the ball valve that is connected to the copper pipe.
4 Unroll a few inches of solder from the roll and place the tip of the solder on the seam where the copper pipe and ball valve meet. Wait for it to begin to melt and then quickly drag it around the entire circumference of the pipe.
5 Turn off the propane torch and allow the solder to cool. Wipe off the excess flux with a damp rag.
6 Connect piping to the other side of the ball valve in the same manner.
Ball valves are used to control the flow of liquids, steam, chemicals and foods. They are simple, inexpensive and reliable valves that are often seen in laboratories, factories and food processing. They consist of a ball that can be rotated -- usually through 90 degrees. A hole drilled through the ball, allows fluid flow when the hole in the ball is aligned with the flow. When the ball is rotated, the ball blocks the flow.
